Comment:
Plasmodium vivax & Plasmodium falciparum - mixed infection thin film - note delicate ring of P.falciparum and larger irregular trophozoite of P.vivax in an enlarged red cell with Schuffner's dots. Mixed infections can be missed because of the suppression of P. vivax by P.falciparum and the difficulty in determining the identity if only ring forms are present. A DNA probe for P.vivax was found very useful to detect such mixed infection by Boreham and Relf 1991 - see Bibliography. Accurate species identification is essential for correct treatment to be administered.
